Ajax and the Ajax Foundation have been supporting the Emma Children’s Hospital for many years. For example, the players visit the children at the Emma every year, children are occasionally invited to attend an Ajax match, there is a lovely little Ajax pitch where children can play football, and there are postboxes where children can send a letter to their favourite player.

In the Emma Children's Hospital, we have realised a special dream: creating a musical space so that patients can relax, have fun and find distraction in the power of music. In the Ziggo Dome XS, patients can attend live performances by artists who visit the Emma, they can relax by watching livestreams of concerts by their favourite artists, explore their own musical talents and connect with fellow patients in the hospital.

At the beginning of 2022, the new Neonatal ICU opened in the Emma Children's Hospital. In addition to brand-new rooms, this department also features a skills lab, where parents can be trained to perform nursing procedures so they can do so with greater confidence. This skills lab was made possible in part thanks to support from Oya’s Childcare.

At the Emma Children's Hospital, we are continually committed to improving care for our young patients. One of the projects we support as a Foundation focuses on the development of custom-made ventilation masks for children. This innovation ensures that children who depend on breathing equipment can breathe more comfortably and effectively.

At the Emma Children's Hospital, hundreds of children have to undergo unpleasant and often painful medical procedures every year, such as a lumbar puncture, biopsy, keyhole surgery or the insertion of an intravenous drip. This is very stressful, and that is why these children nowadays receive sedation during such procedures. Sedation literally means lowering the level of consciousness so that these procedures can be carried out without any problems. After all, in anxious children, treatments take longer or even fail, which has not only physical, but also psychological and emotional consequences. It can also lead to psychological trauma and/or avoidance of healthcare at a later age. Naturally, we want to prevent that.

Although this method is effective, the process can be long-term and practising is often only possible in specific situations.

The best future for every child. That sounds self-evident, but for some children and young people it is not that simple. As the only hospital in the Netherlands, the Emma Children's Hospital provides specialist care for children with complex physical and psychological conditions. Children and young people only end up in this Medical Psychiatric Unit (MPU) when treatment elsewhere no longer helps. The department is often seen as a ‘last resort’.
